Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Program Overview

The Hampton University School of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree is a post master’s programdesignedtoexpand the advanced specialty practice practitioner (NPs, CMW, CRNA and CNS) role in systems evaluation and change, health policy evaluation, leadership and  outcomes research. Students will be introduced to analytical methodology, information technology, theoretical frameworks, healthcare finance and economics, legal and ethical issues in healthcare. The DNP program requires a minimum of 33 hours of course work beyond the master’s level and 500 clinical hours. The curriculum adheres to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing DNP Essentials. This program is delivered in a 100% online platform with three campus residency sessions.

 

Admissions Criteria

Completed admission packages are accepted on a continual basis. However, regardless of when applicants are admitted, they will begin their program course work in the upcoming fall semester.

·         A Master’s of Science degree from an accredited nursing program

·         A graduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale

·         A copy of a current unencumbered license(as an RN and advanced practice license, if applicable) to practice in any state at the time of admission

·         A copy of a current certification in an advanced practice specialty includes: NPs, CMW, CRNA and CNS only

·         A completed Online application

·         A personal philosophy statement (maximum of five pages-double spaced) that includes:

  • Rational for selecting Hampton University’s DNP program
  • Description of goals and future career trajectory
  • Research area of interest
  • Publications or scholarly activities(if applicable)

 

-        Three (3) letters of recommendation: Letters must be on professional letterhead and address the applicant’s employment and academic qualifications, clinical expertise, and suitability for graduate studies. The letters should be submitted by:

  • One from  recent employer
  • One from a previous nursing professor, academic adviser, or supervisor
  • One from a colleague (preferably in a clinical practice/research/academic setting)

-        A current curriculum vitae or resume

-        A personal interview (at the applicant's expense) with selected members of the faculty

-        Approval of the School of Nursing Graduate Admissions, Scholarship, and Standards Committee
